Its been a while since we've heard any updates about this. Anyone want to tell us what's going on?
When I saw the message for my ObjectDesktop renewal notice come up, I realized that at this point last year, I renewed it for a new and improved Object Bar 2.0 coming soon.....

I don't mind that it takes time, but I would like to see some more progress. Especially if I'm going to throw down some more $$$.

Unless a piece of software has been depricated, it is the duty of the developing organization to continue to maintain the most current release, at the least, as well as provide support for it. However, updates are usually optional, however, with the presence of a stated future release, support for the current release is usually naturally extended. I do enjoy all of the stardock software I currently use, however, I too am waiting for the next shoe to drop, so to speak, before I pick up my complete ODNT subby. I hope things pick up soon, as I am really chocking with anticipation.

I have found OB to be ok but have a few 'challenges' with it:

1. In the start-programs menu it shows programs that have been removed already
2. I can not remove icon in the quick start bar
3. Virtual desktops are getting better but still have issues when an application is full screen and performs some action
4. Using Lotus Notes 7.0.1 integrated Instant Messaging I've noticed some popups just don't appear (I learn about them when I shut down and am asked if I want to close open chats but I can't see them anywhere - not even when I stop OB)

The Virtual Dimension tool from source forge actually seems to be doing what I need but if OB 2.0 really does come out I will use it (since I've paid for it).

ARGH!!!!!

Every time someone mentions bugs or "challenges" with the current build of OB it adds months of dev time as SD starts over from scratch.

What is the deal here?  The guys from Stardock MUST have read this thread at least at some point.  Why no answers?  It's been MONTHS!  All we want at this point is answers.  Are they even working on it?

I mean something as simple as "We are aware of the problems and have not forgotten about ObjectBar.  We are currently working on 2.0 and we will let you know when there is another beta available" or SOMETHING like that.  Just something to acknowledge that they even "hear" us.  They post on other threads in other topics.  Why avoid the OB forum?  Why no words at all?

C'mon Stardock, you guys are REALLY REALLY dropping the ball on this one.  At least give us a status update or SOMETHING.

It really is NOT a lot to ask.  The latest version of GC is out.  No more excuses.  You guys can find the 3 minutes to post an OB status update here for us.

Thanks,

Sorry about that and yes, we've dropped the ball on ObjectBar 2.

But there is some news, we hopefully will have a new build of ObjectBar 2 (beta still) up in the next week or so.

And I do want to apologize about our horrible communication on this project.  There's no excuse for it.

The best I can do is provide an explaination:

We're currently stretched far thinner than we have in the past. It would require practically a book to go into the whole detail. It's a classic case of when a company moves from being a few people to being a bigger company and things not getting done as they should get done.

THis past year has been one of transition and we'r ein the process of hiring and adjusting to the changes we've seen.

On top of that, it's amazing how much difference one or two people can make. When those people aren't as available as they were, the results can be devastating.

Let me give you an example - I've been trying to bring someone on whose only j ob is to hang out and provide forum support.  But we seem to go through these guys like water for various reasons.

Half the problem is Stardock's failure to delivery ObjectBar in a timely manner.

But the other half, and worse problem, has been our failure to communicate with you guys -- our customers. The ones who pay our bills. And it's the latter part that is truly upsetting to me, as someone who knows the importance of customer loyalty.

Overall, the problem at Stardock for the past 6 months could be summed up thusly: Scaleability.  Processes that work fine in a company of 10 to 15 people start to fall apart when you have 40 people.

Let me give you a specific example of this:

Tech support.  For years -- 1995 to 2005 -- we used PM Mail for tech support. NOthing fancy. It worked fine.  But it simply didn't scale to when you move from having a base of say 10,000 technically savvy users to say 500,000 users, most of whom aren't that technically savvy.  So we've had to undergo a lot of internal changes to build a better system.

What you're seeing in other areas is the same kind of thing.  Our method of doing quality assurance simply has fallen apart as the # of things that they're responsible for has grown and the complexity of it has grown.

Take for instance how much more involved WindowBlinds or DesktopX or heck even ObjectBar has become since the 1.0 release.  Throw in more products and voila, you have a complete mess up like what you've seen in our handling of ObjectBar 2.

We get updates in, they go through QA -  partially - go back to the developer but then don't make it onto ODNT even though we've gotten builds.

ThinkDesk has seen even bigger problems in this regard since it's a whole new set of products.

What we're doing this year is we're reorganizing so that we can do a better job on this.  I realize that's not going to help fix what's happened but hopefully you'll be able to see benefits as it starts to go forward.

That's probably more info than you wanted to hear.  And it doesn't solve the problem.

We DO have a new build of ObjectBar 2 though. And so we'll be working to get that up. But it's still not ready for a full 2.0. But it's close.

Thank you for the information.

Thanks for info. Brad. !!!

And just let us know how can we community members be helpful --

No, it doesn't solve the problem, but I don't think you realize how much this info will ease the frustration many of us have been feeling.
Thank you...

As new users of OD and also OB I have been reading this thread with more and more frustration - probably caused by the falling tone along the thread - I was just beginning to think that my $$$ on OD, CX and extra icons were lost or at least given bad out

BUT how magic a little communication can be

Thank you for the answer!!!

I am looking forward to hear more about a new release.

on Mar 24, 2006
Thanks for the info Brad! Now, I guess I'll have to start a separate thread about RightClick and SVD since they were discussed in other threads regarding a lack of attention to those applications! Now that you've replied on OB2.0, I'll have to start a "What's going on with RightClick?" and "What's going on with Stardock Virtual Desktops?" thread!!

I'll admit that I was having fun every couple of weeks adding a new post with the following:

*eerie silence* ... *occasional wind rush* ... *tumbleweed*

P.S.: Maybe Sir Zubaz could help respond to OB2 questions in the customer support role there at Stardock since he has so many issues and seems so tech 'savvy' JK ...?!?!?!
